Amavata begins with fasting — burn Ama first, then lubricate the joints
180M Indians with arthritis · 2nd most disabling condition
Root dosha
Vata (OA) · Ama + Vata (RA)
Why lifestyle matters
Curd, nightshades, cold exposure, and sedentary lifestyle are the primary triggers — all Vata-aggravating and Ama-forming. NSAIDs provide temporary relief but deepen the underlying Agni weakness, causing recurrence. Ayurvedic treatment addresses the Ama root cause.
Daily habits
6:00 AM
Castor Oil Protocol
1 tsp castor oil in warm ginger tea every morning — Vagbhata's primary internal lubricant for Vata joints. Also gentle laxative for Ama clearance. Take on empty stomach.
6:30 AM
Pawanmuktasana Series
Joint-freeing exercises — gentle rotation of each joint from feet to neck in sequence. 20–30 minutes. Most important preventive and therapeutic practice for ALL joint conditions.
Pre-bath
Medicated Joint Oil Application
Warm Mahanarayan oil or Bala oil massaged into affected joints — held for 20 minutes before warm bath. Do not apply cold oil — always warm it first.
12:00 PM
Anti-Ama Lunch
Ginger-forward cooking — all food must contain ginger. Anti-inflammatory spices (turmeric, pepper, cumin) in every meal. No curd, no nightshades, no cold.
Morning sun
Surya Sevana (Sun Therapy)
20–30 min morning sun directly on affected joints — Vitamin D3 synthesis, joint warming, anti-inflammatory effect. Vagbhata specifically prescribes Atapa (sunlight) for Sandhivata.
Bedtime
Castor Oil Pack
Warm castor oil applied to affected joint, covered with warm cloth — held overnight or 30 minutes. Most powerful topical anti-inflammatory in Ayurveda.
